Washington College of Education Site Navigation About Us Degrees and Programs Specialty Units Apply Give Scholarships Building Expansion Faculty & Staff Resources Featured Content UM partners with MSU on a $2.3 million grant for a five-year project to educate school counselors to fill jobs in rural Montana. Missoula — University of Montana and its partners at the Montana Office of Public Instruction and Montana State University have received a $2.3 million grant for a program that is designed to train high-quality school and mental health counselors to work in rural areas of Montana. The grant, from the U.S. Department of Education, will be used for a five-year project, "Rural Mental Health Preparation/Practice Pathway.” Montana was one of only three states to receive this grant. “We have a real need to recruit, prepare and retain counselors to work in Montana’s rural schools,” said Anna Elliott , the grant’s principal investigator and an assistant counseling professor in the MSU Department of Health and Human Development in the College of Education, Health and Human Development . “This grant aims to help K-12 students in these rural schools, as well as to provide excellent training to help our graduates be successful in these settings.” <read more> UM program lets students earn teaching degree without leaving their community. The University of Montana, Phyllis J. Washington College of Education, Department of Teaching and Learning are working hard to connect educators across Montana. Students at Flathead Valley Community College and Helena College have the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from the University of Montana without having to leave their communities. Through these partnerships distance-students begin classwork in their third and fourth years. Once the classes evolve to social sciences and elementary education courses, the students begin classwork via live video conference with UM professors. However, the students still participate as a group in a classroom at Helena College or Flathead Valley Community College. Montana Access Scholarship Program Matches Gifts for Need-Based Scholarships In April, the 66th Montana Legislature approved $2 million for state need - based student aid that, when matched one - to - one by private donations from each campus fundraising g foundation, will provide a total of $4 million in financial aid for students across the Montana University System over the next two years. As campus foundations receive donations for this program, the State of Montana, through the Office of the Commission oner of Higher Education, will match those funds up to the cap amounts specified for each campus. Distribution of the state funds is conditional on a 1:1 match from private donors. UM - Missoula and Missoula College students are eligible to receive more th an $1 million in scholarships through the program, provided that the University of Montana Foundation receives $529,000 in philanthropic gifts directed to this initiative by March 2020.
